Fifth Grader wins GeoBee

On December 16th, William Simmers, a 5th grade student at Maple Street School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Madison Humphrey, an 8th grade student, was runner up. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 24th annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the country participate in this competition. The school winners, including Simmers, will take a written test and up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee in April, 2012.

Maple Street Sets Strategic Plan for 2011-2016

The Board of Trustees of Maple Street School announces a new strategic plan for 2011-2016. Fran Bisselle, head of school, states, “We accomplished many of our goals in our last strategic plan including expansion of our scholarship program, introducing more competitive athletic offerings, and becoming a beacon of excellence in elementary education nationally. I am excited about continuing our transition from a start-up entrepreneurial school to one cultivating long-term loyalty, holding true to our mission of excellence while maintaining a joyful learning atmosphere, where students feel known and loved. New priorities will include raising an endowment to attract and retain students from all socio-economic levels through our substantial need-based scholarship program. We are also excited to develop and retain educators of the highest caliber by working toward higher salary levels and benefits sufficient to attract and retain outstanding faculty and staff. In addition, we want to continue to deliver to our children the highest quality education using the latest technology, research, resources, and assessments that are reflective of the 21st century skills our students will need to be productive global citizens. Finally, we are excited to pursue a facilities plan that enables us to move towards the operation of the school as environmentally sustainable—and having a building that allows us to teach our students about how to be more green. We are excited by these goals, and we look forward to the next five years.”
