UPCOMING EVENTS

3rd Annual Southern VT Educators Symposium
Friday, March 16

All schools Pre-K through 12, private and public, in Southern VT are invited to attend this day-long symposium. By gathering together and sharing ideas about best-practice we will continue to develop the professional skills of our educators and increase opportunities for collaboration. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Universal Design: Improving Instruction for All Learners.”

The keynote speaker for the symposium will be Linda Hecker, M.Ed. Ms. Hecker has taught at Landmark College in Putney, VT since its’ founding in 1985. Currently a lead education specialist for the institute, she oversees teacher training programs, teaches English, study skills, and music classes, and served as an academic advisor, Chair of the Tutorial Department, and Academic Dean. She received her M.Ed. from the University of Hartford and B.A. from Brandeis University.

The event includes breakfast, lunch, keynote address, and two breakout sessions at a cost of $75. For further information about attending the symposium, please contact Joy Stewart at Maple Street School at (802) 362-7137 or jstewart@maplestreetschool.com.

Athletics

The physical education and athletics program promotes the enjoyment of physical exercise and strives to instill in students a lifelong commitment to fitness. Through physical education classes and team sports, students develop their athletic skills and learn the importance of sportsmanship and working together toward a common goal. Athletics brings students, and parents, alumni and teachers who serve as coaches together in a context outside the classroom and encourages responsibility to self and others. It is also a significant source of school spirit, as students, teachers, and parents take pride in our teams.

In the Lower School, physical education classes begin in kindergarten and focus on building hand-eye coordination and technical skills through inclusive games and exercises aimed at encouraging a love of physical activity. Students are introduced to team sports in grade 3. Exposure to a wide range of sports and team activities continues in the Upper School, with interscholastic competition beginning in grade 6.

Maple Street School is proud of its record of graduating experienced athletes who go on to compete in their secondary schools and colleges, many taking leading roles and competing at high levels.
