Third grade is an age of discovery and exploration. The third grade curriculum is designed to support and guide students through exposure to more content area reading. In the third grade, basic math skills are reviewed and reinforced, and new concepts in the areas of multiplication, fractions, area, and perimeter are introduced. Thematic units on rivers, Egypt, electricity and magnetism, Brazil, and the rainforest are woven throughout the curriculum via inquiry and project based lessons.

Some of our current and past classroom projects include:

  • “Journey to the River Sea” and “The Tomb Thief” connected to our units on the Rainforest and Ancient Egypt.

  • Field trips to the Rod Factory at Orvis and the American Museum of Fly fishing.

  • Our Community Service project is to collect contributions for Second Chance and learn about their work with animals.

  • An annual tradition is the 3rd grade quilt project, which incorporates math, art, Social Studies, and the reading of The Canada Geese Quilt.

  • Building stream tables and looking for macroinvertebrates in our Outdoor Classroom space.
