Maple Street School welcomes area schoolchildren with Jane T. Gilbert Fund Performance
On Wednesday, October 10, Maple Street School will host nearly 700 area school children from 12 schools in grades 4-8 for two performances of the National Players' production of “Around the World in 80 Days.” This world-class adaptation of the classic Jules Verne adventure will take the audience on a whirlwind trip around the world by boat, train and elephant.
The two showings at 9 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. will host students from all around the Northshire region. Last year, Maple Street School hosted students from Pre-K through 4th grade for a Theatreworks USA production of “Dragons Love Tacos.” These nationally-acclaimed performances are underwritten by the Jane T. Gilbert Fund, established at Maple Street School in 2016 primarily from a gift of assets from the Northshire Performing Arts and private donations. The transfer of its assets to Maple Street School marked the close of Northshire Performing Arts, which sponsored free, educational performances in the area for 12 years, frequently holding these performances in Maple Street School’s Hunter Hall. “We are looking forward to hosting another performance for area schoolchildren here at Maple Street School,” said Fanning Hearon, Head of School. “Thanks to the generosity of the NPA through the Jane Gilbert Fund, we are delighted that a large number of local students will have the opportunity to experience professional actors on the stage of Hunter Hall.”
"Again this year, Maple Street is honored to be the first school performance site for a brand new production from a well-respected touring theatre company," said Maureen Chaffee, Maple Street School 3rd grade teacher and enrichment coordinator. “The National Players from Olney, Maryland are known for their quality performances of the classics, and I know that students will become immersed in this voyage around the world.”
In addition to the two performances, the National Players will be offering five theatre workshops entitled; Acting & Improv, Stage Combat, Decoding Shakespeare, Discover Your Voice, and Movement Onstage, which will take place at Maple Street after school on October 10th for grades 2-8.
